1997 Bowdre-Rees-Knox House

$10.00

This house was built in 1806 on the Old Wrightsboro Road by Thomas Bowdre upon relocating from Virginia to Georgia after he married. He and his wife, Epatha Rees, reared a family of 10 children in this house. It was passed down through the Rees family and eventually purchased by the Scott family. In 1907 it was purchased by Mr. Peter Knox, Sr. and became home for tenant farmers and overseers until 1969. It lay vacant until 1972 when renovation began through the efforts of Robert E. Knox and members of the Hunt. The house now serves as the clubhouse for the Belle Meade Hunt and a focal point of the Knox Farm. The upstairs rooms have been restored and a bathroom added so that the house can be used for Hunt and social functions. However, many of the original aspects were preserved including the original brick foundation, window panes and the original fireplace mantles.
