2005 The Rock House
The Rock House (circa 1785) is the oldest stone dwelling in Georgia and the earliest dwelling in the state with its original architectural form intact. Built near the Colonial Wrightsboro Settlement (1768), the dwelling’s three-story fieldstone construction is unique to Georgia.Thomas Ansley moved southward with the Quakers in the 1780’s from New Jersey and settled in the area using fieldstone quarried from local granite outcroppings found along the nearby geographic fall line to build his home. He built the house to resemble the stone homes in Delaware Valley of New Jersey from which he had come. The home remained part of a working plantation until the 20th Century. In 1966 the dwelling was given to the Wrightsboro Quaker Community Foundation, Inc., now known as the Wrightsboro Foundation, Inc. who repaired and restored the structure to its former glory in 1981. Part of the restoration was removing the concrete to reveal the stonework detail of the home. The home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is reported to be an ancestral home of President Jimmy Carter.
