Union Baptist Church is located five miles northwest of Thomson, formerly in Warren County. In 1808 there came into the minds and hearts of the people of the community the desire to organize a local church, as the nearest church of this faith was about ten miles away. It is fortunate the church records from the beginning are still preserved documenting the organization of the church with twenty charter members in 1809, with the first record books containing the names of the members, both men and women. The new constitution for the church took place on July 29, 1809 in the Union Meeting House at Upton’s Creek. By 1861 there were 109 memberships consisting of thiry males, fifty-nine women, and twenty African Americans. The church was built in 1843 and additional land was donated to make way for repairs and enlarging the building. The church added of a cemetery with the first grave dating back to 1866 because in the earlier days every family had its own burial ground. Union Baptist Church has blessed the community and celebrated its 200th anniversary in July 2009.
