2023 - Springfield Baptist Church
In 1873 just eight years after the Civil War ended, Springfield Baptist Church was born from the inspiration of a small group of Christian servants: Rev. Benjamin F Granade, Deacon Horace Taylor, Brother Lee Wellmaker, Sister Mary Taylor along with Rev. Ellington and Mr. Stockton of the Caucasian Baptist Church. Collectively, the group agreed upon a symbolic new name for the place of worship: Springfield. “Spring” was to represent the beginning of a great stream, never still, building and continuing to rise and flow. “Field” to conjure a place for planting tender sprouts that will nurture to full growth. Along with securing a small building that was once used as a school called the Columbia Institute for $250.00, the purchase included three fourths of an acre of land on which a pitched roof building was constructed when two more acres were acquired. A larger structure was built in the 1880’s to accommodate the congregations growth. And with the growth of members came the addition of a choir stand, piano and organ between 1893 and 1938.Rev. J.H. West pastored the church between 1938 and 1983 until his passing, at which time a scholarship was created in his name. And in 2018 under the leadership of Rev. F.D. Favors, the Pine Street Elementary School which had many names starting with the McDuffie Training Institute for Blacks, was purchased. It was the first school for the black community in McDuffie County, and after the acquisition from the McDuffie Board of Education, Springfield Baptist renamed it the Springfield Multipurpose Complex.
