This four-story structure was built in 1917 at a cost of $115,000 and opened as the Herald Building a year after the city’s famous 1916 fire. Thousands of reporters have told Augustans the stories of their times from within its walls. Including 22 U.S. presidential elections, 74 Masters Tournaments and 90 World Series baseball contests. Many of the nation’s political leaders have been interviewed at this location as well. Designed by famed Augusta architect Lloyd Preacher, The News Building at 725 Broad Street has been the center of journalism in the Augusta region for almost a century. After merging operations with The Augusta Chronicle in 1949, it was officially purchased by The Chronicle in 1955 with staffs of both morning and afternoon newspapers sharing its facilities until the Herald ceased publication in 1993. Marking its 225th year in Augusta in 2010, The Chronicle was continues to serve its readers from this location and was designated an important site in American journalism by the National Society of Professional Journalists.
