2014 - The Southern Railway Freight Depot

$15.00

Constructed in the early 1900’s, the freight depot was originally used by the South Carolina Railroad which merged into the Augusta Southern Railway in 1901. The original freight room that sat perpendicular to Reynolds Street was demolished sometime after 1970. The Augusta Southern was reported to operate 84 miles of track using 4 locomotives, 8 passenger cars and 41 freight cars. Augusta businessman James U Jackson, head of the ownership group, later built the electric inter-urban line between Augusta and Aiken, SC. The area was a hub of activity for Augusta and its surrounding communities for over 30 years. The 84 miles of track ended up abandoned in 1934.
